Coaching at Curlew Rowing Club 2012

Curlew Rowing Club in East London is delighted to announce that the successful coaching team of 2011 will return for 2012 with Ray Cassidy as Director of Rowing and Head Coach assisted by Rick Gear, Dave Keogh, and Ben Askins, looking after the men’s rowing and with David Gillbe looking after Women’s squad assisted by the other Club coaches.

Ray Cassidy - Director of Rowing and Head Coach


Director of Rowing and Head Coach: Ray CassidyRay is the South East Regional Coaching Commissioner and also a Coach Educator. He has had considerable experience as a club coach having been the Director of Rowing at Maidstone Invicta Rowing Club in 2008-2009 and Head Coach of Curlew last year, and for the 10 years before that was the Head Coach at Curlew. Whilst at Curlew, nine qualification campaigns to Henley Royal Regatta in a row were achieved topped by the qualification of two Thames Cup qualifiers in 2011. Ray has also coached successfully at London Rowing Club, Thames Rowing Club, The Oratory School and Queen Mary University of London Boat Club.

Rick Geer - Coach


Coach: Rick Geer Rick has 15 years of coxing and coaching experience. He has coxed and coached clubs at Oxford for four years, including a year employed as coach at the OUBC rowing tank facility. He has coxed and coached Curlew’s 1st VIII for the last eight years.

Dave Keogh - Coach


Coach: Dave Keogh Dave has 20 years of rowing experience at university, club and national level. He has also rowed for many years at Thames Rowing Club and competed at Henley Royal Regatta and the Nat Champs.

David Gillbe - Coach


Coach: David Gillbe David learned to row at Oxford University and since then has rowed for various clubs, including Weybridge and OULRC, before settling down at Curlew Rowing Club in 2006. He has been a constant part of the Curlew 1st VIII until he announced his own rowing retirement at Henley 2010 to concentrate on his coaching. He successfully coached the Ladies Squad in 2011.

Ben Askin - Assistant Coach


Assistant Coach: Ben Askin Ben started rowing at school in Reading and then continued at Oxford University. He has been a member of the Club’s top squad since 2003 and this year will be turning hid hand to the Clubs beginners and Development squads.

Martyn Hall - Assistant Coach


Assistant Coach: Martyn Hall Martyn has competed for the club for the last 5 years or so and is this year’s Club Captain. He has decided to pick up the challenge of coaching.
