Trafalgar Rowing Centre grand re-opening

After many years the total refurbishment of the Trafalgar Rowing Centre and a new slipway was unveiled on 18th October 2008.

Lots of members past and present were there to see Nick Raynsford MP, Peter Blaseby, Di Ellis and Alan Megan officiating at the opening of the new slipway and refurbished clubhouse.

There were activities throughout the day starting with races from 10am (Curlew winning the mixed eight and the mixed four, Globe taking the honours in the mixed double), followed by boat displays, presentations about the history of the clubs and of the Thames itself, ergo racing and of course a barbecue.

The refurbished clubhouse was widely admired and everyone at Curlew is looking forward to using this excellent facility more often in the future.

Head of the Charles

On 18th October several intrepid Curlew rowers made the long trek to Boston, Massachusetts to race in the Head of the Charles. Curlew joined forces with a couple of guys from our long-terms friends at Saugatuck Rowing Club came 66th in the men’s Club Eights category.

Pairs’ Head

Curlew was represented by two crews in the Pairs’ Head on 11th October: Ben and Svenja in the mixed doubles and Liz and Emma in WS42x. Conditions were excellent and, following a drama-filled launch from Thames Tradesmen and a spot of sunbathing at the start line, both crews had an excellent row.

The cheers and support from Barnes Bridge were gratefully received since, although the course was shorter than the Fours and Eights Heads, it seemed never-ending. The girls completed the course in 14:05.6 coming 6th in their category, and the mixed double finished in 14:40 coming 11th in their category. Full results are available on the Pairs’ Head results page.
